Zoo Moorings to Chester Basin (Shropshire Union Canal)

When we left this morning, the sun was shining again but it was very hot and humid.

We chugged on from the Zoo moorings and made our way back to Chester Basin.

Coming back into Chester
We moored in the basin below Northgate Staircase locks, we are saving them for tomorrow!
Kev had an appointment in the Asda opticians, so we walked up there, it is about a 20 minute walk from where we were moored.  It is on a retail park and there are quite a few stores there including an Aldi, a B&Q and a Tesco.

We got a few bits of shopping then headed back to the boat.

Telford's Warehouser
We had lunch then walked up into the shops and had a wander around and walked a bit of the walls again then stopped for coffee at The Lock Keeper, a pub by the canal.  The sky got quite dark and we thought a storm was brewing so we headed back to the boat.  We did have a few spots of rain but that was it unless it comes back this evening, but I think it has gone on its way.

We are moored in Chester Basin opposite Telford’s Warehouse which is now a pub/restaurant.  The building itself provides one of the more interesting features in the historic city of Chester. Originally conceived by the famous industrial engineer Thomas Telford in the 1790’s, the Warehouse stands as a magnificent example of Georgian architecture and as a reminder of the once thriving port of Chester.

The building was constructed partly over the canal to allow boats to be located and unloaded from the full height of the loading bay within the building.

The grade 2 listed building was originally converted to a public house in the 1980’s by local architect James Brotherhood.

In 2000, Telford’s was forced to close due to a major fire which destroyed much of the building’s internal features and took nearly a year to restore.

We are staying here tonight then off up 8 locks tomorrow, oh what joy!
