Christleton to The Shady Oak, Tarporley (Shropshire Union Canal)

We are moving on today and unfortunately the forecast is not too good for today.  We started off in the dry but we did have a few showers on the way, but nothing very much, lucky for Kev as he was steering and I was inside!  It was very breezy though, the wind was quite gusty at times.

Long Line of Boats
We chugged on along the canal leaving Christleton behind us and soon came to a long line of moored boats, it seems to go on forever, it must be over a mile and you should slow down when going by moored boats.  Kev did slow down but not as slow as he normally would as the wind was very strong and he didn’t want to be blown into them.

We went on for a few miles and then came to the moorings near the Shady Oak pub at Tarporley and moored up there with a nice view of Beeston Castle.

We had lunch then went out for a walk as it was still dry but the rain clouds were building.  We walked up to Wharton’s lock and sat for a bit in the sunshine, then walked back down the towpath and went into the Shady Oak pub.

The Shady Oak pub
They have a nice selection of gins, about 10 in total and so we tried a couple each, I had Brooklyn gin from New York and Bulldog (also American) and Kev had Thomas Daking from Manchester and London No. 1.  They were all really nice and can add them to our list.  We did sit outside but then it started to rain so we went inside.  It is a nice pub and the staff were friendly.

We walked back to the boat and just after it poured with rain, so how lucky was that.

We are staying here tonight and tomorrow we are off to Beeston Castle which is not far away so looking forward to that and lets hope the sun is shining!
