Visit to Whitchurch

Friday 30th June

We are off to Whitchurch today, a small market town about a 30 minute bus ride from Audlem.  We walked up to the Church to get the bus and soon we were on our way.

Whitchurch
Indoor Market
Whitchurch is a really nice town with lots of old buildings.  We had a wander around, they have a market on a Friday which is in the Civic Centre.  There was a big fruit and veg stall outside and we bought some English raspberries, two punnets for £1, and Scottish Strawberries, two big punnets for £2.  It was a very good stall.

We had a look around the stalls inside and got some nice free range eggs and then went back out into the street and went for coffee in Walkers, it is a Bakers downstairs and a café upstairs, it is in a very old building with all beams, really nice.

Hale Family Butchers
Inside Walker's Cafe
After coffee, we had another walk around the shops and down one of the streets was an old fashioned butchers and it was called Hale, which is my maiden name so obviously had to go in and buy something.  Don’t think it is any relation to us as no butchers in our family as far as I know only farmers.  We also had a look in the church which was at the top of one of the streets and it had some lovely stained glass windows.

Church at Whitchurch
We went back to Walkers café and had a bit of lunch there as it was so nice and we weren’t disappointed.

Lovely windows in the church
Making Powells Pork Pies
Powells Pork Pies
We found a small arcade with a few shops so walked along there and there was a man sat in the window making pork pies, so we went in to have a look.  They use a family recipe which has been passed own through four generations of Powells and the pies are still made in the traditional way to this day.  Hand raised using wooden dollies.    We then did a bit of shopping in Lidl and got the bus back to Audlem.

We enjoyed our visit to Whitchurch and will go again.  We are staying again in Audlem and going round to Janes tomorrow afternoon so we can say bye to them as we are chugging off on Sunday.
