Visit to Chester Falconery

Thursday 13th July

We are staying here again in Chester today.  We had breakfast then walked into the shops and up onto the walls and walked along there and got off and made our way down past the staircase lock which we will be doing tomorrow and into the basin.  We had a walk around there and then went and did a bit of shopping and had our lunch.

Birds sitting in the sun
After lunch, we went to the Falconery which is just off the city walls and next to the Cathedral.  It wasn’t here the last time we were in Chester two years ago.

Look at me, aren't I cute!
I got it
We had a walk around the nature garden and most of the birds were outside.  We had a coffee and then it was time for the flying display.  It was a really good display and the two guys that did it were very informative about the birds.  They took one of the birds right down the end of the field and the other chap had a made up rabbit on a rope with some food attached to it and when the bird was released, he pulled it in very quickly and the bird caught it.  The next bird, I think was a falcon was amazing as he came flying right over our heads and between the people watching, his feathers brushed my arm as he went by, it was a great display.

Trainer and Falcon
They flew four birds, but the last one, a lanner falcon went fly about and didn’t come back for ages, they tracked him and he wasn’t too far away and then they noticed him sitting on a chimney not too far away.  He did come back eventually but he was gone quite some time.  It was a very good display and a really nice place to visit.  Your entrance fee allows you to come and go all day if you want to, we enjoyed it and would visit again.

We went back to the boat and just chilled out.  We are staying here tonight then moving on tomorrow.
