Visit to Llanwrda, South Wales and Whitchurch to Grindley Brook - Llangollen Canal

Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th July

Wednesday and Thursday – We visited our friends Ken and Sue who live in Llanwrda,
Pygmy Goats
Lovely Views of the Black Mountains
Carmarthenshire, South Wales.  We went by train from Whitchurch.  It is a nice train journey as a lot of it is on single track and the stations all look as though they are on a heritage line and a lot of them are request stops including ours so we had to tell the conductor so they stopped for us.

Ken & Sue's Flock
such a great view
Ken and Sue have a small holding with fields and they have a flock of sheep and two pygmy goats who are really cute.  Their house looks over the valley and there are spectacular views of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons.  It was just lovely sitting out with that wonderful view and watching the red kites flying over the valley.  We came back Thursday evening to the boat, but thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Wales and seeing Ken and Sue and look forward to our next visit.

View from their garden

Friday – We stayed moored in Whitchurch and walked up to the town.  We met our friend Jane when she finished work and we went for a late lunch, it was great to see her again.  We went to Benjamin’s café again and it was lovely.  After lunch, we went and done some food shopping.  We were going to walk back but the shopping was heavy so we decided to catch the bus and good job we did as a few minutes after we got on the bus, the heavens opened and it tipped down, we would have been walking in that!  Also the bus fare was only £1.20 each and the stop was right near the canal so good decision.
Coming up the Whitchurch Arm
Saturday – We are moving on today only about a mile to Grindley Brook as tomorrow our friend Rhiannon is coming to stay overnight and that is a good place to meet.

Coming to the Lift Bridge
Going through the lift bridge
We set off from our mooring in the Whitchurch Arm.  I walked up to the lift bridge and Kev chugged out of the arm and down the canal to turn around as the right hand turn from the arm is too tight.  I saw him coming back along and so I opened the bridge.  Kev came through and another boat came around the corner the other way, so I kept the bridge open for them and once they had gone through I shut it.

Coming to a bridge
Moored on the other side of the bridge was NB Pride, the boat we had met on the Montgomery canal with Jess the lovely dog.  Jess came running up to see us and we had a chat with her owner, nice to see them again and then we went on our way.

After about a mile, we were at Grindley Brook and we moored up in the visitor moorings.  In the afternoon, we went for a walk down the locks.

We are staying here now for a couple of days, meeting Rhiannon who we are looking forward to seeing and then we will move on a bit further.
