Llangollen Basin to Sun Trevor - Llangollen Canal

Saturday 29th June

Substitute if Tobias breaks down!

Off we go
We are on the move today but not until this afternoon so first we went for a trip on the horse drawn boat, it is a 45 minute trip down the non navigable section of the canal.  We have always wanted to go on a horse drawn boat so decided to do it today.  It was a great trip, really peaceful and quiet, we really enjoyed it, a bit different being on our boat with the engine rumbling away, all you could hear was clip clop as Tobias trotted along.

We then walked into the town to get a few things.  We went to the butchers which is a great place and the butcher was really friendly and jolly.  We bought some lamb chops and we were joking with him if it was local and he said he knew them all by name, the one we had was Henrietta! Kev said Henrietta’s not cheap and the butcher said ooh she was never cheap! We had a laugh with him.

Sat on the Terrace at the Corn Mill

We then decided to go to The Corn Mill again as it’s such a great setting by the river.  We managed to get a table on the terrace in the sun so we had a drink and a bite to eat and very good it was too.  The River is quite fierce by the bar with rapids and while we were sat there several boats came down riding the rapids, it was great to watch.  We then walked back to the boat and chilled out for a few hours as it was really hot and humid today.

Late afternoon we decided to leave as you can only stay in the Basin two nights and we have had our two nights but you can stay until 5pm.  The trip boat comes back about 4.30pm and we didn’t want to meet him in the narrows so we left the Basin just before 5pm but guess what he wasn’t back!  I got off the boat just past the Wharf and walked along the narrow bit and the trip boat was just coming through followed by a cruiser and two kayaks so Kev waited for them to pass and then it was our turn.  We got through that narrow but okay and stopped at the services.

Going through lift bridge
We then went on our way and was soon approaching the next narrow section and we had to wait for a boat to come through so I walked on to see if anyone else was coming but they weren’t so Kev came through.
last bit of narrows
We went on a bit further and went through the lift bridge that is left open and on we went towards the last narrow bit.  We met two more boats just before the narrow bit.  I got off and checked go see if it was all clear, there was a couple walking along the canal and I asked them if there were any boats coming, they said no so I asked them if they would tell Kev to come on when they passed him and they said they would.  He was soon coming around the corner and we were safely through the narrow parts.

Perfect bench to sit awhile
We moored up in the visitor moorings near the Sun Trevor pub just a short way up the canal from the last narrow bit.
We are staying here tonight and also tomorrow, then Monday we will move onto Trevor Basin just before the Pontcysyllte aqueduct.
