Day Trip to Oswestry & Chirk to Lion Quays Hotel - Llangollen Canal

Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th July

Oswestry Market
Indoor Market
St Oswalds Church
Wednesday – We are off to Oswestry today by bus.  The stop is a short walk up the road from where we are moored.  The bus came and after about 20 minutes we were in Oswestry.  It is a nice town with plenty of shops and quite a lot of old buildings.  There was an outdoor market today which had quite a few stalls, so we had a wander around there and went in to the indoor market and had a browse around there, it is on two floors.

Millennium Window
We had a wander around the shops, then walked down to St. Oswald’s Church.  It is a big church.  It was open so we went inside and had a look around.  There is a lovely millennium window made by local artist Jane Gray in 2004.  It shows the tree of life with Christian symbols.  Above are the crests of local organisations who contributed to the cost of its installation. There is a monument to the Yale family, descendents of Elihu Yale who gave money to an infant university in the USA, which was then called Yale after him.

Triptych
It is a very beautiful church.  On the wall is a large triptych which shows Moses and Aaron with the ten commandments on stone tablets.  Either side are the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed, our statement of belief.  This may have been painted by local carriage painters and is thought to date from before 1730.

St. Catherine's Chapel
It was then time for lunch, there was a café/shop in the church grounds and we did look in there, but they only took cash and as we didn’t have a lot with us, we went to find somewhere else.  We came across The Old Coffeepot and Tea Rooms, so went in there, it was really nice and everyone was very friendly.  After lunch, we did some shopping then got the bus back.  Oswestry was a nice town and we enjoyed our visit there.

Under a bridge we go

Thursday – Today we are on the move, just a mile or so to the Lion Quays Hotel & Spa where they have their own mooring pontoons.

We left our mooring and headed off under the bridge and on our way.  We met a few boats coming the other way, the canal was a bit shallow in places so we were banging and scraping along but we made it to the moorings.  The pontoons are rather silted up so we eased our bow in and moored up okay.

Sitting on the terrace by our boat
There was a sign on the wall which said if you register at reception they will give you a voucher for a complimentary drink so off we trotted to find the reception.  We register and sure enough we were given a voucher for one drink.  We walked over to the Spa where they have a café and had a coffee then headed to the restaurant and bar.  They had an extensive selection of gin but the gin of the month was Larios Rose so I had that and we sat on the terrace overlooking the moorings in the glorious sunshine watching the world go by.

Its a lovely hotel with extensive grounds and a wonderful setting right by the canal.  This evening we are having a meal in the restaurant and will most probably sit outside on the terrace if it stays as warm and sunny this evening as it is at present, it is an early birthday treat for me from Kev so looking forward to that.

Pond in the grounds
We are staying here tonight, then heading off in the morning.
