Maesbury Marsh to Queens Head - Montgomery Canal

Tuesday 9th to Wednesday 10th July

Fast flowing today
At the services

The Ford
Tuesday – We stayed put and chilled out.  We walked to the house where they sell eggs, but no one was home, so we walked around the corner where there is a ford which runs across the road and it was running very fast today.  We then walked up the other way as far as the pub then decided to bring the boat up to here so Kev walked back and got the boat.  We stopped at the services to get water and use the Elsan,  then went under the bridge and moored in the visitor moorings.

The Navigation Inn
The Shanty Singers
In the evening, we went to the pub for a meal, when we first went in, the Landlord was not very friendly and made us feel like we shouldn’t be in there but we persevered and it did get better as the evening wore on.  The food was really good and the pub was done out really nice.  In the other bar, there was five men singing canal and sea shanty’s so after we had eaten, we went in there and listened to them, they were really good and sang lots of songs about the canals and fly boats and when we went to square up the bill, the Landlord was totally different and very chatty so perhaps we caught him at a bad moment when we first arrived.  His partner was the chef and he was very outgoing and friendly, so in the end it turned out to be a nice evening.
Waiting at the lock

Coming into the top lock
Wednesday – We are now making our way back up the canal as we are booked to go back up the locks on Friday.  We are going a couple of miles back to Queen’s Head.

Clover Flower
The sun was shining and it was very warm as we set off along the canal.  We have three locks to do and soon we were approaching the first lock.  Unfortunately it was full, so I had to empty it first.
Comma Butterfly
Dragonfly
Insects eating the flowers
These locks aren’t very deep so they don’t take long to fill.  Once through this one, we were on to the next one.  I emptied the lock and soon we were coming up the lock and on our way to the third lock.  That one done we went on for a short way and under a couple of bridges and moored up where we moored on the way down.

Rednal Arm
In the afternoon, we went for a walk along the towpath to the Rednal Arm.  Along this stretch, there were many butterflies, insects and dragon flies,  so nice to see.  At Rednal Arm, there is a Basin and we were hoping to walk down to it, but unfortunately there was no path, so we walked back along the canal to a bench and sat there for a while then walked back to the boat.

Ringlet Butterfly
We are staying here tonight, then off back up to the Weston Arm tomorrow to get water and get ready for our passage back up the locks on Friday.
