Whixall Moss to Ellesmere - Llangollen Canal

Today we are on the move and we were glad to see it was actually dry and the sun was trying to come out, a rarity these days!

Prees Branch
Straight section of Canal

We set off from our mooring under the bridge and past the Prees Branch.  The canal was quiet and only saw a couple of boats moving.  We chugged on and then saw a water point so stopped there to fill up the tank, there was also rubbish bins so we got rid of all the rubbish we had accumulated in the last few days.

Coming to a bridge
Another Bridge
Then on we went passing Cole Mere which was through the trees and then we came to Blake Mere, a charming little lake right by the towpath.

Blake Mere
Ellesmere Tunnel
We then came to Ellesmere tunnel which is only 87yds long so we were soon through there and can therefore on a bit further.  We were then approaching Ellesmere and we moored up before the Ellesmere arm.

Going through the Tunnel
Deli & Bakers
In the afternoon we walked down the arm and into the town where there is a Tesco right by the canal and several other shops along with a Co-op in the town.  There is also a lovely Bakery and Delicatessen called Vermeulens, what a great place, they make all their own bread, pies, pork pies and cakes so needless to say we had to buy some and they had a good selection of bacon, sausages, raw and cooked meats.

Ellesmere Arm
We then walked back through the town stopping off at a café for a coffee then headed back to the boat.

We are staying here for a couple of days now as tomorrow we want to explore The Mere, a big lake near here and Ellesmere Castle, a motte and bailey so let’s hope the sun is shining for once!
