Staying at Chirk and Day Trip to Wrexham

Monday 24th June

We are off to Wrexham today by train.  We walked up the slope from the canal to the road and the train station is just there.  The train soon came and after about twenty minutes we were at Wrexham.

Chirk Station
Monument to Miners in Wrexham
It is a nice town with lots of shops.  We had a wander around then went to visit St. Giles Church.  It is 180 feet long and is the largest medieval parish church in Wales and the present building dates mainly from the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th centuries.  The tower, 135ft high, was completed in 1506.  The church is dedicated to St.Giles.  It is a very beautiful church and has some lovely stained glass windows.

We then had another walk around the shops, there was a small outdoor market and also an indoor market so we wandered around there.  We then went to KFC for lunch and then it was time to get the train back.  We had a nice day in Wrexham and it stayed dry as well.

Inside St. Giles
When we got back to the boat, we decided to move further up the canal to the moorings outside Chirk marina which are in the open as where we are presently moored it is under trees and is a bit like the black hole of Calcutta!  We untied and set off along the canal and moored up in the sunshine opposite the marina.  The side of our boat was all covered in mud splatters from the dirty towpath under the trees so Kev washed it all off then I cleaned the windows.  We had only been finished a short time and the heavens opened and we had heavy rain and rumbling thunder, that will teach me to clean the windows!  We are staying here tonight and possibly tomorrow depending if it’s raining in the morning, we shall see!

The Mighty Ponty in the distance
We decided to stay put today as it was raining when we got up.  It did stop later so we were able to get out for a walk.  We walked up the towpath, through Whitehouse tunnel and up to the lift bridge.

Railway Viaduct through the trees
There was a nice view of the lovely Viaduct and also the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which we will be going over in a couple of days.  We then turned around and walked back through the tunnel, I didn’t mind too much as there was a boat going through so it’s head light lit up the tunnel and back to the boat.  We are staying here again tonight, then off in the morning.
