Wednesday 10th
October
We
are on the move today and checked the back of the boat before we untied, all clear
of sheep today!

Passing NB Dexta |
Coming to the Aqueduct |
We
went under the bridge and on along the canal past the diesel boat NB Dexta and
along there and then came to an aqueduct, over there we went pass the bloody
steps so called because in 1839 Christina Collins was travelling to London to
join her husband and booked a passage on a narrowboat, but unfortunately the
men on the boat she was travelling on killed her and left her body in the canal
and legend has it that locals carried her body up the steps and into the Talbot
Inn and apparently sometimes blood can be seen seeping down the steps!
Quickly past
them and then we were approaching Rugeley and moored up in the visitor
moorings.
We had lunch
then spent the afternoon shopping. There
is a good variety of shops in Rugeley and three supermarkets to choose from so
you can usually get everything you need.
We are
staying here a couple of days now.
Thursday 11th October
Lovely Sunny Morning |
We are off
to Measham today which is over 20 miles away.
Back in the Summer when we were near there Kev broke his tooth so went
to the dentist there to get it fixed and went for the more expensive white
filling which he was told would last, but after eight weeks it dropped out in
one piece, so he has to go back to get it fixed.
Sign at the Aqueduct |
We walked to
Trent Valley train station which is about a 15 to 20 minute walk and got the
train to Atherstone. We had a bit of
time before the bus so we had a wander around the shops and then went for
coffee.
We then got
the bus to Measham, a 40 minute bus ride.
Kev went off to the dentist and I had walk through the village then went
in the cafe to wait for him. Kev got his
tooth fixed and it is guaranteed for a year but let’s hope it stays in this
time as if it doesn't they will be refunding him as we won't be going back
again!
The Bloody Steps! |
We got the
bus back to Atherstone then the train back to Rugeley. Luckily it was a dry sunny day but a lot of
travelling for 40 minutes dental work!
We popped
into Tesco on our way back to the boat and bumped into Ruth and Peter who moor
on the Gloucester & Sharpness canal. They were moored near us and they have bought
a new boat called Peru so we said we would call into see them later this
evening and also have a nose at their new boat.
Under the Bridge at Rugeley |
There was a space behind us on the moorings so Peter moved their boat
up. We went next door and had a lovely evening catching up, their new boat is
lovely and a nice layout with all mod cons, it was so nice to see them again.
We are
staying here again tonight and maybe tomorrow as well depending what Storm
Callum brings.
Friday 12th October
We have
decided to stay put today as it is really windy and lots of rain. We went up into the town this morning to get
a few things then back to the boat, battened down the hatches and will just
chill out for the rest of the day and hopefully the weather will be better in
the morning and we can chug on.
