Danes Moss Bridge to Bollington by the Adelphi Mill (Macclesfield Canal)

Lovely view from the canal
House James Brindley did apprenticeship

We are moving on today but had a leisurely start and didn’t leave until mid-morning.  Bill is staying put for a few days while Al catches up with him, so we said our goodbyes and set off along the canal.  We had a few drops of rain early morning, but by the time we were ready to go, it was warm with sunny spells.

Lovely bridge on the Macc
The Hovis Mill
We went on along the canal, the views are really lovely along this stretch and over Gurnett Adqueduct from where you can see the house Where James Brindley did his apprenticeship.

The canal is quite shallow here and there were quite a few boats coming the other way, so a few times we nearly got stuck. We slowly wound our way along and then went past the Hovis Mill which was built in the 1920s and was the birthplace of the famous flour.  The visitor moorings at Macclesfield are pontoons and we were told that they are usually full but today as we went past, they were empty, hopefully they will be like that on our way back so we can stop.

Clarence Mill
Nice houses in Bollington
On along we went, the canal is quite narrow in places as well as shallow, but after a while we were approaching Bollington and moored on the visitor moorings alongside Adelphi Mill, which was once a silk mill and has now been converted into offices.

We had lunch then went for a walk along the towpath to the aqueduct and the huge Clarence Mill, a textile mill now converted into small manufacturing units and apartments.  There is also a café and a discovery centre.
Few Shops in Bollington

We had a look in the Discovery Centre which gives you the history of Bollington, it was very interesting and the chap there was very informative.  We then had a drink in the café sat by the canal.

We then went for a walk in the town, there are some nice houses which gives it the feel of a mill town. There are a few shops. We then walked back to the boat.

We are staying here tonight and also tomorrow.
