Audlem to Adderley (below locks) (Shropshire Union Canal)

Off to the locks we go
Going up

We are on the move today going through the last two locks of the Audlem flight and then travelling only a couple of miles to the bottom of the next flight of locks, Adderley where there is a farm shop at the top lock so we want to visit there.

We set off along the canal towards the lock and just as we got there a boat was coming out so that was good and in we went.  There was also a boat waiting to come down so I had a couple of helpers.
Audlem Top Lock

Coming into Audlem Top Lock
We went onto Audlem top lock and a boat came out of there as well so in we went and just as the lock was full and we were opening the gate a boat came around the corner so that was good as we could leave the gate open for them and I could hop on.

Cake stall at the top lock
Lovely morning on the Shroppie
At this lock there is a house which has a stall selling home-made cake, ice-creams and drinks. The cake looked really nice but I resisted the temptation to buy any and we went on our way.  I actually walked up to it yesterday from where we were moored and they have a freezer selling Cheshire Farm ice-cream and we had one of them, it is such delicious ice-cream and it was a very warm afternoon!

It was a glorious sunny day and really warm so it was lovely as we chugged along.  We went under a couple of bridges and then we moored up below the next set of locks, Adderley, there are five locks in this flight but we shall save them for another day.  This really is a lovely place to moor as it is very rural with lovely views.

Our boat from the lane

We walked up the five locks to the farm shop which is at the top of the locks but unfortunately it wasn’t open today but it should be open tomorrow so we will call back then.  We then walked on out onto the lane and walked up into the small village of Adderley, not much here just a few houses but very nice and we walked on through and back to the canal via the bridge we came through this morning so we did a circular walk which is always nice.  When we were walking back down the lane to the canal we could see our boat across the field.
Kev's Monster Fender

We had lunch and watched the qualifying of the Grand Prix then just chilled out for the rest of the afternoon. Kev is busy fender making at the moment and he finished one yesterday, it is a monster, I think it might fit the QE2!  It is really good though and now he is on his next one, he is making four that size and then will make some smaller ones as well, he enjoys doing it and it keeps him out of mischief!

We are staying here until Monday when we will chug on to Market Drayton.

  1. The house with the stall had run out of everything when we got there — not even one of those delicious ice creams left!

    1. The ice-cream was delicious and there was all sorts of lovely cake and bags with a cream tea in but I resisted the temptation, it's a great idea though and popular with boaters and walkers.

    2. We got a cream tea from the Adderley farm shop stall, so that made up for it.
