Adderley to Market Drayton (Shropshire Union Canal)

Sunset at Adderley
Approaching Adderley locks
Adderley bottom lock

We are on the move today and although it had been raining earlier, it brighten up as we set off to the Adderley flight of five locks.  A boat had come down a bit earlier which was good news for us as that meant the locks would be in our favour.  I walked up to the bottom lock and opened the gates and Kev brought the boat in.  Soon we were through that lock and onto the next.

one more to go
Farm stall at Adderley top lock
We met a couple of boats coming down so it didn’t take that long to get through the locks and before we knew it we were coming up the top lock.  At this lock there is a stall on the lock selling bacon, black pudding, sausages, scones, drinks, etc.  It belongs to the farm there.  In the Summer they have a farm shop as well but they usually only do that during the Summer months.  All the pork, lamb, etc. comes from the farm and they cure the bacon and make the sausages and black pudding.  We have had produce from them before and it was very good.

We went on along the canal, we met a couple of boats but it was quite quiet and after a few miles we came to Market Drayton where we moored up.

Buttercross Farm Shop
When we were on the bus last week going to Market Drayton from Audlem we went past a farm shop on the A53 road, so we decided to walk up to it today.  It was about a mile or so and although the road was busy, there was a footpath.

It is called Buttercross Farm and they have a farm shop selling sausages, pork, beef, chicken, free range eggs, we saw the chickens running around as we walked down the drive.  It was a really good place and we bought some lovely sausages, pork chops, lamb chops, chicken breasts and cooked ham.  They have a window in the farm shop so you can see them making the sausages, etc.

It was well worth the walk out to it.  We walked back to the boat, then walked into the town which is about a 20 minute walked from the canal.

We browsed around the shops and then went for a coffee.

We are staying here for a few days as tomorrow we are meeting my friend Gill who lives in Shrewsbury and is coming on the bus to meet us and on Wednesday it is market day in the town so we shall stay for that and then chug off on Thursday.
