Goldstone to Bridge 50 (Soudley Bridge) - Shropshire Union Canal

Saturday 12th June

We have had a nice few days at Goldstone.  On Thursday we met Jane, Sheila and Tony for lunch in the Wharf Tavern which is opposite to where we are moored.  We had a lovely lunch, great food and company with lots of laughs as always.

Friday we walked up to the Goldstone Hall hotel as they do afternoon tea as we wanted to do a reckkie for my birthday.  It is a lovely place and we sat on the terrace overlooking the gardens and had coffee and freshly baked, still warm scones with jam and cream and they were the best scones we have had in a long time. We will certainly be having afternoon tea there on our way back.

Today (Saturday) we have decided to move on as both of  Kev’s orders have been collected.  Our friend Geoff who was moored at Market Drayton  moored behind us, so we went and had a chat with him.

We then untied and moved along to the water point where we filled up the tank.

We then set off along the canal, it was a glorious sunny hot day.  We chugged along under a few bridges and past some long term moored boats.

We met one or two boats coming the other way but the canal is still fairly quiet.  We saw quite a lot of duck and geese families as we went along and even a moor hen with her baby, we haven’t seen many of them so far.

We went on and then went under Bridge 51.  Between this bridge and the next we have seen boats moored there in the past.  It is a lovely open spot so we thought if there were no boats there we would give it a go and see if we can get into the side.  Along the Shropshire Union canal there is a shelf under the water and sometimes it stops you from getting near to the side.

We came to the nice open spot with lovely views of The Wreakin and we pulled in and got near the side, we just dropped a few big fenders so we didn’t bang or scrape on the shelf and moored up.

We haven’t moored here before but it is a lovely spot overlooking the fields and with great views of The Wreakin, no roads nearby and not many walkers so very peaceful with just the wildlife for company and the bird song is really loud, just lovely to listen to.

We are going to stay here for a couple of days to do a few jobs around the boat, chill out and have a BBQ then we will move on a few miles.
