Market Drayton to Adderley (Shropshire Union Canal)

Wednesday  9th to Friday 11th September

Used to be a Bridge Here
We had a few days at Market Drayton, Wednesday there was a market in the town so we had a wander around there and met our friend Jane for a coffee.  In the evening we had Chinese takeaway and it was as good as ever.  Thursday I walked up to the town to do some shopping and Kev stayed at the boat making more products.

Today (Friday) we are on the move about 4 miles and 5 locks to Adderley.  It was quite a bright morning as we set off. We went under a bridge and stopped at the services.

Once the water tank was full we untied and set off passing Talbot Wharf.
Nice Views

Leaving Market Drayton
There was a boat in front of us and he was going quite slow so we ambled along behind him. There are lots of moored boats on this stretch so it’s quite slow going anyway.

We chugged under a few bridges, it’s a nice stretch of the canal with views over the fields.

We then came to turnover bridge where the towpath swaps from one side of the canal to the other. The bridges were made like this to allow a horse towing a boat to cross the canal when the towpath changes sides.

Working Down the Flight
We went on a bit further then came to the top of the five Adderley locks.  There was two boats in front of us going down and some coming up so once they had gone it was our turn.

These locks are not very deep so don’t take long to empty.  We were soon through the first lock and on our way to the next one.

There were a few boats coming up so on the first three locks they were ready for us and when we were down we could go out leaving the gates open for the next boat to go in.

Adderley Bottom Lock
The last two locks were against us as no one else was coming up, so we had to fill them first.
View from our Mooring
We were soon leaving the last lock and a boat did come along wanting to go up so we left the gates open for them.

We chugged on to the moorings not far from the locks and tied up there.

This is a really nice rural spot to moor with nice open countryside so we shall stay here a few days and then we will make our way to Audlem a couple of miles away.
