Bridge 1 (Llangollen Canal) to Nantwich (Shropshire Union Canal)

Wednesday 31st July and Thursday 1st August

Lots of Cheese
James Martin
Wednesday – We got the bus to Nantwich as we needed to get a part from the Chandlery for our sink.  They didn’t have what we needed, but they ordered it for us.  The Nantwich show and International Cheese Show was on today and although the actual show had been cancelled due to bad weather earlier in the week, the Cheese Show was open and it was now free entry, so we went in to have a look.  There were many farms and businesses exhibiting cheese so we looked around there, then walked around all the stalls selling cheese and giving out samples.  We tasted some great cheese and bought a few pieces.

There was also a cookery demonstration by James Martin and that was free to watch as well so we sat and watched him cook a few things, we have seen him before but he is really good and very entertaining.

We then headed out to the road and got the bus into the town.  We did some shopping then got the bus back.  We are staying here one more day but then off down the locks and back onto the Shropshire Union canal tomorrow.

Coming into Hurleston Top Lock
Working down the locks
Thursday – We are on the move today and have the four Hurleston locks to go down.  We untied and moved down to the water point to fill up.  There was a boat in front of us and several coming up the locks so soon it was our turn and we went into the top lock when a boat had come out.  There was a volunteer on and he half helped me with the second lock then went off for his lunch leaving me to open the gates, never mind there was another boat coming up so I left them open for them and went onto lock No. 3.

Lock No. 3
Lock No. 4
Down the lock we go
Damaged Lock Wall
We were soon through there and going into the last lock.  This lock is manned by Canal and River Trust employees as the lock is falling in on one side and has greatly reduced the width of the lock so it needs to be used with caution.  The chap working the lock said I could get on board and he would do the lock so that was good and soon the gates were opening and out we went turning right onto the Shropshire Union canal leaving the wonderful Llangollen canal behind us, we thoroughly enjoyed our time on that canal and it’s quite sad to be leaving it behind us but time to move on and we shall be doing it again in the future.

Turning onto the Shroppie
Out we go
We chugged on along the canal under a few bridges and after a mile or so we were approaching Nantwich and we moored in the moorings just past the water point.

In the afternoon I did some work on the laptop and Kev did some painting on his products getting things ready to sell.
Another nice day

Horses by the canal
We are staying here for a few days now and hopefully do some trading then we will turn around and head back up the other way.
