Days out to Nottingham & Leicester and Willington to Branston (below lock) (Trent & Mersey Canal)

Nottingham
Nottingham Train Station

When we came back from Ely, we stayed in the marina Tuesday night then left the marina Wednesday morning and moored at Willington near the train station.  We are now staying here a few days as we have a few day trips to do.

Nottingham Canal
Wednesday afternoon we caught the train to Nottingham.  It is a nice city and we had a look around the shops and walked down to the canal and also did some shopping.

Leicester Cathedral
Friday we went to Leicester by train.  We went to the fruit and veg market which is great and bought all sorts of things and then went to the Cathedral as we didn’t go there last time we were here as it was closed, but this time it was open so we had a look inside.  It is really nice.  We had a look around the shops then caught the train back to Willington.

Betty's Farm Shop
Betty's Chickens
Today Saturday, we are leaving Willington and chugging back up the canal, about six miles today and one lock.  We found out there was a farm shop not far up the road, so we thought before we left we would have a walk up there.  We set off up the main road and after about a 10 minute walk we came to Betty’s Farm Shop so in we went.  Actually the walk up the drive into the farm shop was nearly as long as the walk from the canal!

Sign for Betty's Farm Shop
As we walked up the drive, there was sheep and chickens in the fields.  There was a sign on the fence saying they have 24,000 chickens which are totally free range and they lay 22,000 eggs per day!  They can come and go as they please and it said they put themselves to bed when the security lights come on at night.
What a lovely farm shop, lots of lovely things, cheeses, meat, poultry, chutneys, pickles, etc.  We had a browse and bought a few things.  There was lots of eggs all different sizes and prices, but not expensive at all.  We went for the seconds eggs which apparently are different shapes and sizes but the friendly girl behind the counter picked us out some nice big ones, they were £1 half dozen.

The Black Swan Again
We walked back to the boat and set off, we pulled across to the water point and filled up then set off along the canal, it was dry when we set off but we did get a few spits while we were travelling along but nothing much.  We saw the black swan further along the canal, good to see that it was still around and hadn’t been chased too far by the swan family that was also in this area.
Coming into Dallow Lock

We chugged on along the canal, over the small aqueducts and then we were at Dallow Lock, a boat was just coming out so that was lucky and there was another one waiting to come down, so I had help with the lock and we were soon through there and on our way.  Through Burton Upon Trent we went and after another mile or so, we moored up below Branston Lock in a nice quiet open spot.

We are staying here tonight then chugging on to Barton Turn tomorrow.
