Alrewas to Fradley Junction (Trent & Mersey Canal)

Heavy Rain Shower
Chugging through Alrewas

Last night we had a really heavy rain shower and a few claps of thunder, it didn't last for very long but it dropped the temperature by about 10 degrees and made it much more comfortable. Today the sun was shining as we set off from Alrwas this morning, we passed lots of moored boats this is a very popular mooring spot, around the corner we went and then we were at Bagnall Lock, the first of four locks we are doing today.  The lock was full so I went up and emptied it and Kev came in with the boat.

In Bagnall Lock
The bottom gates on this lock won’t stay shut so I shut one and went to do the other and the one I had shut opened again.  Luckily a boat was coming down, so the lady came down and she shut one and I shut the other but then there was no-one to open the paddle at the other end to fill the lock so Kev started to get out.  The lady’s husband then strolled down to the lock without a windlass I should mention and she was shouting to him to help but he seemed to be in a world of his own!  He then twigged and started running back to the boat to get a windlass but she said take mine, so he did. By this time Kev was out of the boat with the rope and Kev did say to the chap just open the paddle a bit just to keep the gates shut, but guess what he ran to the paddle and opened it full before we could stop him and the boat surged forward, but somehow Kev managed to hold the boat so it didn’t crash into the top gate, lucky he did as Kev said if he couldn’t have held it and it was close, that chap would have got a mouth full!  I don’t think he thought he had done anything wrong.
Approaching Common Lock

Hunt's Lock all ready for us
We were soon at that lock and left the Gung Ho Idiot behind us and on we went along the canal to Common Lock where there was a boat coming out, so that made easy going and soon we were at Hunt’s Lock where there was another boat coming down so soon through that one as well.

We had one more lock to do and there was a volunteer on that one.  We had to wait for a work boat to come through then it was our turn.

Chugging onto Keeper's Lock
Fradley Pool Nature Reserve
We were then at Fradley Junction and we moored up in the visitor moorings before the next lock.  We will save them for another day.

We had lunch then went for a walk up to the top of the locks stopping in the café on the way up for coffee and to sit by the water watching the boats go up and down.  On the way back past the café we got an ice-cream and then went for a walk around Fradley Pool Nature Reserve then back to the boat.

It has been a lovely sunny day but this evening it has gone very overcast so maybe another rain shower might be on the way.

We are staying here tonight then chugging on tomorrow.
