Rugby to Newbold on Avon (North Oxford Canal)

Passing Rugby Wharf Arm

We are moving on today but less than a couple of miles as we want to stop at Newbold on Avon as there is a nature reserve in an old quarry there and we thought it would be nice to have a walk around there, also the forecast is not so good today, so wanted to get moored up before the rain comes.

Barley Mow
We left Rugby and chugged on along the canal past the Brownsover Arm.  This arm is now a feeder to the canal, but was once the original route of the canal meandering northwards to the coalfields of Rugby.  Past Rugby Wharf Arm where there is a boatyard and used for mooring and then we were at Newbold on Avon where we moored up.

Rain bouncing off the canal
We had a few heavy showers, then it brighten up so we walked along the towpath to the pub, the Barley Mow, it is right on the canal and then walked back along to Newbold Quarry Park which is a nature reserve.  We had a walk all around it, it is a really nice quiet place and a good walk. The sun came out while we were there which made it even nicer.  We walked back to the boat and in the evening we had a few really heavy showers, the rain was bouncing off the water, first time on our trip we have had rain that heavy.

The forecast is not too good tomorrow either so depending what it is like when we get up will determine whether we stay put or move on.

  1. Just been catching up on your blog for the last week. Enjoying looking at your pics – I don't remember the details of that stretch at all! By the way, how was that Dexter pie, was it as good as the Lowsonford one?

  2. We have only done this stretch once before and we can't remember it either, it all feels new to us, its a nice canal though. The Dexter pie was delicious, as good as the Lowsonford one, but wins for us as the lady actually made the pastry and pie herself on the premises, but would have either of them again.
