Newbold on Avon to Hopsford Aqueduct (North Oxford Canal)

Newbold Tunnel
Coming out the Tunnel

It was dry with sunny spells as we set off this morning.  We stopped at the water point to fill up then set off along the canal and into Newbold Tunnel which is 250yds long and was built during the shortening of the Oxford Canals in the 1820s, past a marina and then we were chugging past All Oaks wood where there are moorings on the edge of the wood, but we went on as we were hoping to moor at Brinklow.

Footbridge across canal
We were soon at Stretton Wharf where there is a boatyard and a boat hire place.  There is also a footbridge across the canal which we have to open to get through, but we were lucky today as there was a boat coming the other way and so the lady from that boat did the bridge and we just sailed through.

Passing under the M6 Motorway
We went past the hire boat moorings and then tried to moor as this is where we could walk to Brinklow and a farm shop, but we couldn’t get in the side due to rocks, etc.  We tried a few places, then gave up and chugged on for another couple of miles, under the M6 Motorway and moored in a lovely spot in the middle of nowhere just before Hopsford Aqueduct.

We just chilled out for the rest of the day.  The rain that was forecast for earlier in the day didn’t come until the evening so that was okay as we got here and moored up in the dry again.  We are staying here tonight, then decide whether to stay or move on in the morning.
