Great Haywood Marina to Weston upon Trent (Trent and Mersey Canal)

We are leaving the Marina today and heading up the canal.  It has been nice staying in there but will be nice to get back on the canal as it is a bit like being in a housing estate as all the boats are close together and there is not much of a view.

Leaving our Mooring
Leaving the Marina
We did the washing and filled up with water, then untied and off we went back out on to the canal.
Lovely Morning on the Canal
In Hoo Mill Lock
We chugged along for a bit then came to Hoo Mill Lock, there was a boat in front of us so we gave them a hand going through the lock then we emptied the lock and Kev brought the boat in.  This is not a very deep lock so it didn’t take long to fill.  A boat turned up behind us so the lady shut the gate and we went on our way.

It’s a nice stretch of canal and lots of geese, swans and ducks and some had babies.  There was a duck on the bank in the grass and first of all it looked like she was on her own, but when we looked closer, there was at least a dozen ducklings nestled in the grass, they were almost  the same colour so blended in really well.

In Weston Lock
We then came to Weston Lock and waited for the boat in front to go through, then it was our turn.  Two boats then turned up behind us so we had some help and soon we were on our way again.

Amerton Farm
Amerton Farm
We chugged on for a mile or so and then we were at Weston upon Trent where we moored up.  It was a lovely sunny warm day again.  We had lunch then headed out for a walk.  We had seen on one of our canal maps there was a place called Amerton  Farm which was not too far away so we set off to find it.  We walked up the road and along the village green to the main road.  We crossed that and down a lane by the church and we came to the railway bridge, the path ran alongside the railway line for a bit, luckily no trains came and then we went into a field and walked along the edge, the path was okay first and then it got pretty rough, then Kev spottted a path into the woods so we followed that and had a nice walk in the woods and then came to another lane which led us to the main road and across the road was the Farm.
Craft Shop

It was a really nice place with a farm shop, bakery, craft shops, a pottery, a childrens play area and a nice cafe/restaurant.  There is even a narrow gauge railway there, but unfortunately it is usually only open weekends We had a wander around and then had a coffee.  It is a really nice place and well worth the two mile walk.

Farm Shop
We walked back but this time stayed on the footpath through the woods and we came to some steps which led us down to the good bit of path through the field and back along by the railway and back down the lane and back to the village green.

We had a look where the bus stop was on the main road as we are catching the bus to Stafford tomorrow then we walked back to the boat and it started raining but not too hard so we didn’t really get wet.  Near the canal there is a row of houses and one of the houses has chickens running around and they sell the eggs so we bought a dozen as we went by.

We are staying here tonight and tomorrow so we can go food shopping in Stafford then probably moving on Thursday.
