Great Haywood to Wolseley Bridge (Trent & Mersey Canal)

It was pouring with rain this morning when we got up but hopefully if it clears up later, we will chug on a couple of miles.

We went up to the Farm Shop again and got a few more things including picking some more strawberries.  We then went for a coffee in the café but sat inside as it was still raining.

Coming into Haywood Lock
The rain eased off so we walked up to the Post Office in the village then back to the boat.

Passing Shugborough Hall
We had lunch then it brightened up so we decided to chug on as a couple of miles along the canal is Wolseley Bridge where we saw on our map that there is a pub, a Garden Centre and a Nature Reserve.  We set off to Haywood Lock where there is a café by the lock and we sat in the garden there yesterday.  There was a boat in front of us so we helped them through the lock and as there wasn’t a boat coming, we filled up the lock and soon we were in the lock and going down.  Just as we were about to come out, a boat was coming up so we left the gates open for them and went on our way.

In a queue for Colwich Lock
As we went on along the canal there were views of Shugborough Hall, this is a nice canal and as we have only done this part once before we don’t remember it much so it is new to us which is always nice.

Going down Colwich Lock
We got to Colwich lock where there was a bit of a queue so we waited for our turn and had to fill the lock again as there wasn’t a boat coming up but this lock is not very deep so doesn’t take long.

Out of Colwich Lock we go
Lots of Geese in a field
A boat came behind us so the people from that boat came down to help and so I got on and they did the gates and out we went and on along the canal and moored up just before Wolseley Bridge.

It had been overcast when we were chugging along and had a few spots of rain but when we had moored up the sun came out and it was a nice evening.

We are staying here tonight and tomorrow as we are going to explore the Nature Reserve, the Garden Centre and possibly the Pub!

Moored at Wolseley Bridge

  1. You've done more in the rain than ever this trip! We felt like real fair weather sailors, sitting it out on Baker's Quay from Saturday until today. When Mike the lock keeper asked us if we minded waiting a few minutes for a boat to join us, we said "what's a few minutes when we've waited three days" :-)
