Saturday 18th September
Yesterday Jane and Malcolm brought Harry late morning and we all had lunch in the pub which was really nice, then Jane and Malcolm went home and we took Harry out for a walk then back to the boat.
Today we are going on a few miles to Gnosall where Jane and Malcolm will pick Harry up on Sunday. Harry took his rightful place at the back with his pal Kev, he loves sitting out there on the seat watching everything go by.
It was nice to see the sun shining as we set off from
Wheaton Aston. We went under a few
bridges and past High Onn wharf where there are lots of moored boats.
We went on our way passing a few boats coming the other way
and then we were approaching Cowley tunnel.
This short tunnel was originally intended to be much longer – 690yds –
but most of it was opened out at an early stage during construction (in 1831)
because of dangerous faults in the rock and now only 81yds remain.
The tunnel is unlined and to the south of it a steep narrow
cutting through solid rock stretches a considerable distance, it’s quite
remarkable considering it was cut out by hand.
In the afternoon we took Harry out for a walk and called in
at the bakery, it is a shop that sells everything and lots at bargain prices,
we love this shop and always go there when we are in Gnosall.
